Open Burning

  • Beginning on 4/1/2011, the state has banned all open burning of household trash.

Within the Village of Dimondale you can burn:

  • Campfires – must be 15 feet from property lines and buildings, no more than three feet in diameter, and in a pit or other container. No permit required.
  • Barbecues, gas grills, etc. No permit required.
  • No other burning is permitted, with or without a permit.
  • Fires must be constantly attended until they are out.
  • Any fire, or smoke from which creates a nuisance, must be extinguished.
  • Any person who burns in violation, or who allows a fire to get out of control, may be held liable for the cost of extinguishment and any damage caused.

In the Township, outside the Village, you can burn:

  • Campfires – must be 15 feet from property lines and buildings, no more that three feet in diameter, and in a pit or other container. No permit required.

  • Brush. Permit required
  • Fires must be constantly attended until they are out.
  • The burning of rubber, plastic, leather, or petroleum materials is prohibited.
  •  The burning of building demolition materials, including scraps at a building site, is prohibited.
  • Any fire, or the smoke from which creates a nuisance, must be extinguished.
  • Any person who burns in violation, or who allows a fire to get out of control, may be held liable for the cost of extinguishment and any damage caused.
